Advanced Essay Writing Syllabus

Overview: This course is aimed to help students to write English essays about controversial issues and who are ambitious about cultivating their authority as writers.

Reading Assignments: Several essays are selected to read in the first few weeks.
After that, we will also be reading the work of the writers. Mostof the rest of the reading will be determined by the class.

Writing Assignments: Students will be well prepared to lead discussion of the essays they choose, it is required to structure a model essay but give it an entirely new content.
The final essay will be an independent project to be undertaken in consultation with me. The essay is a famously commodious form, personal, academic, humorous, and editorial. And of course they are often mixedwith each other. The assignment descriptions should be provided and the work will be graded on its substance and style. I will comment on drafts of each paper before they turn the final version in, and they will also benefit from the feedback of their classmates.

Participation—Regular attendance as well as responsible preparation for and fullengagement in class discussionsis crucial.Students are also expected to revise draftsthoroughly and to be committed to the peer review process, showing respect to theirclassmates and the academic setting. Except at certain expressed times or by special arrangement, the use of laptops and other electronic communication devices is prohibited.
Students’ consistent attendance is essential.

1.     Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People are never satisfied with what they have; they always want something more or something different. Use specific reasons to support your answer.
2.     Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? All students should be required to study art and music in secondary school. Use specific reasons to support your answer.

October _ Essays planned to be discussed:

1.    Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? There is nothing that young people can teach older people. Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.
2.    Some young children spend a great amount of their time practicing sports. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
3.    Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Only people who earn a lot of money are successful. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

November _Essays planned to be discussed:

1.    Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? A person’s childhood years (the time from birth to twelve years of age) are the most important years of a person’s life. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
2.    Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Playing a game is fun only when you win. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
3.    Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents are the best teachers. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
4.    Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People behave differently when they wear different clothes. Do you agree that different clothes influence the way people behave? Use specific examples to support your answer.

1. “When people succeed, it is because of hard work. Luck has nothing to do with success.” Do you agree or disagree with the quotation above? Use specific reasons and examples to explain your position.
2. It is better for children to grow up in the countryside than in a big city. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to develop your essay.

In December essays should be e-mailed to the teacher.
